This airport felt drab. She remembered how she felt at the airport near felt. More exciting. Running away from the cafe and Imogen. All of her responsibilities.
When she had ample time before boarding time she thought about getting a book from the store. Instead she decided to get caught up with her old friends.
It seemed that Imogen was now completely online. She had a different personality. Used a different voice. McKayla couldn't recognize her.
Before she had left the cafe she thought she would never talk to again. Then during her trip she had missed her old boss, realized how foolish it was to try to escape her old life. But now seeing this theatrical figure trying to shill coffee she thought again of her old feelings.
Strange, McKayala thought, it was the same feelings as before even though Imogen was different back then. It wasn't like Imogen's personality had been the reason for McKayla's need for space. It was something else. Even though she had been away for a month now, that something else was still unclear. Even so, it was time to return to some semblance of a real life.
There was no plan yet. First thing was to return to the apartment and start packing. There was two months left on the lease. All the stuff she didn't need she would donate. The rest she would take with her or put in storage. And she did know she would end up somewhere else. Maybe Birmingham, Indiana or someplace like that.
It was four days into her time at Cappuccino Kim's where the barista had asked where she was from. She told him Westcity. He smiled gently and said, "I know that place. I've been there. Nice city."
This made her smile. Even though Cappuccino Kim didn't say much. Didn't provide details of when he was there or how long and what for.
"That's nice." she had responded with the smile. A smile less gentle than his. It was roaring with emotion.
"Indeed." Cappucino Kim said.
On that day before McKayla was leaving another man came in named Drew. But it wasn't the man from Cambridge. It was the man from .
"Abe, my friend. The usual," he said.
Later on she would find out that Cappuccino Kim hated it when people said the usual. But this Drew from Michigan said it just to mess with him.
Even later McKayla was surprised by something Cappuccino Kim said.
"You're looking for a new place to live right?"
She had expected him to say that she should move here. She was surprised however when he said, "you should checkout Birmingham, Indiana. You might like it."
